The harbor in Lysekil is cordoned off after about 60 red-listed sharks and rays were found dead on the bottom.
The macabre discovery was made on Monday by a group of students in marine biology. When they dived in to check the find, it turned out to be about the protected species of porbeagle, chlorella and woodpecker. Some of the sharks were still breathing but were dying, others were already dead.
A criminal report was drawn up by the Coast Guard, which has now initiated a preliminary investigation into fishing crimes. A technical investigation in the form of dives will take place on Thursday, and a decision has therefore been made to block off the area in the port during the time that investigations are carried out. Interrogations will also be held.
“This is both sad and serious. We have laws and regulations to protect our sensitive seas and biodiversity, it is a crime if you do not follow them,” said Jonas Berg, head of the coastal station in Lysekil in a press release.
