Germany’s centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) has clearly won the state election in Saarland, according to the first projections. According to the 6 pm (1600 GMT) projections by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, the SPD with their top candidate Anke Rehlinger were far ahead of the ruling conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of incumbent Saarland Premier Tobias Hans. The conservatives suffered significant losses in Sunday’s election, according to the broadcasters’ projections.
