EU leaders have backed plans from the European Commission to require member states to set up mandatory gas reserves to secure energy supplies for next winter and tackle rising costs. The move is to be the European Union’s “insurance policy against supply disruption,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference. The EU executive’s proposal requires European governments to ensure gas reserves are at 80% before November 1. This rises to 90% for the following years with the commission planning interim reports on gas reserve levels before the November target.
