The 27 EU member states have re-elected Charles Michel as president of the European Council on Thursday. The former prime minister of Belgium was elected to a second two-and-a-half-year term until November 2024 at an EU leaders’ summit in Brussels. He can not pursue a third term. As president, Michel is in charge of steering the work of the European Council, the EU institution that brings together the 27 national leaders and politically guides the European Union.
