NATO has activated what it described as chemical and nuclear “defence elements” to protect its member states against the consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says. “Our top military commander … has activated NATO’s chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence elements and allies are deploying additional chemical and biological and nuclear defences,” Stoltenberg said after an extraordinary summit of NATO leaders. “So we are taking measures both to support Ukraine and also to defend ourselves,” Stoltenberg added.
