Berlin plans to use the former Tegel Airport as an reception centre for war refugees from Ukraine, mayor Franziska Giffey announced. The capacity of the current reception centre in Reinickendorf, in the northwest of the city, is far from sufficient to cope with the current challenges, she said. It was initially unclear when Tegel could start being used as a reception centre. Between Sunday and Monday, more than 13,000 refugees have arrived in Berlin, according to official figures. “We assume that the high numbers will continue,” said Giffey.
