Two renowned German orchestras have cut their links with Russian star conductor Valery Gergiev due to his refusal to condemn the invasion of Ukraine. The mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, sacked the chief conductor from his position as the city’s philharmonic orchestra on Tuesday because of his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reiter had on Friday given Gergiev a Monday deadline to denounce Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
