A majority of Italy’s quarrelling parties have agreed to elect incumbent President Sergio Mattarella for another term in the eighth round of elections on Saturday, following a week of inconclusive votes. South Tyrolean Senator Julia Unterberger told journalists the decision was taken after the 80-year-old agreed to run for a second term. Previously, parties such as the far-right Lega, the Social Democrats and the conservative Forza Italia had already agreed to back Mattarella. The eighth round of voting started on Saturday afternoon.
