Heavy rains created mudslides that buried homes, flooded streets, and washed away automobiles and buses in the historic Brazilian mountain town of Petropolis, local government authorities reported on Wednesday. Petropolis, or the “Imperial City,” is a summer retreat for Brazil’s kings in the 19th century, located in the hills above Rio de Janeiro.
