You probably know Machu Picchu, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Installed in Peru, this citadel seems however to have another original name. Explanations.
Picchu or Huayna Picchu: this is what we know as Machu Picchu would be called. Information shared in the Ñawpa Pasha: Journal of the Institute of Andean Studies by Donato Amado Gonzales, historian from the Ministry of Culture of Peru, and Brian Bauer, archaeologist from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Being one of the largest archaeological sites in the world, the name Machu Picchu is said to have been associated with the ruins from 1911.
In order to obtain this information about the original name of this ancient Inca citadel located about 80 km from Cusco, Peru, the two specialists studied independent data. They examined the notes of former researchers, in particular Bingham, and other documents related to the various works carried out on the site. They also worked using the first maps and atlas descriptions of the region and land documents from the 17th century kept at the Archivo Regional del Cusco. “We started with the uncertainty of the name of the ruins when Bingham first visited them. We then reviewed several maps and atlases printed prior to Bingham’s visit to the ruins”explained Brian Bauer. “There is significant data that suggests that the Inca city was actually called Picchu or more likely, Huayna Picchu. »
Archaeologists thus discovered that the ruins of an Inca city named Huayna Picchu are mentioned in a 1904 atlas and that Bingham was informed in 1911 of ruins called Huayna Picchu along the Urubamba river, all before leaving Cusco for find the remains. “The most definitive links to the original name of the Inca city are preserved in accounts written by the Spaniards relatively soon after the region came under their control in the late 16th century”, detailed Brian Bauer. The concluding researcher: “We end with an astonishing account of the late 16th century when the indigenous peoples of the region planned to return to reoccupy the site they called Huayna Picchu. »
