AVM released a new laboratory version for the FRITZ!Box 7590 and 7590 AX last week and added an interesting point to the changelog. One speaks now quite officially of the new frequency band 6 GHz. Although no FRITZ!Box and no repeater/powerline can currently communicate with 6 GHz, an option is added to the FRITZ!OS operating system.

Specifically, it is about the display of 6 GHz connections on the Mesh overview in the FRITZ!Box. The representation with a WiFi 6E router would also be conceivable and logical. However, as far as is known, none of the devices can do 6 GHz. According to AVM, the FRITZ!Box 7590 AX is also not designed for this. You need new hardware, it was said in the past.

The exact wording in the laboratory, the beta version for FRITZ!Boxes, is:

  • improvement In the “Home network / Mesh” menu, the display of 6 GHz connections has been added to WLAN devices

However, if the FRITZ!Box does not support 6 GHz, then this improvement is of no use from a purely logical point of view. It remains to be seen whether the FRITZ!Box 7590 AX could eventually reach 6 GHz with an update. That would be a nice move, of course. An official request from AVM is already underway and we will add the answer to our post as soon as it is available.

A new device is also not announced at the moment. According to statements from Berlin, even the FRITZ!Box 4060, currently the strongest WLAN model, cannot process 6 GHz.

We’ll wait and see… Until then, keep your eyes open 😉.
