It’s no longer a big secret that a new installment in the Need for Speed racing game series has long been in the works. Players on the last-gen consoles could then go away empty-handed.
If you believe a new rumor, then the next Need for Speed will no longer appear for the last console generation around PS4 and Xbox One. The title presumably planned for this November could then be reserved exclusively for the newer platforms Xbox Series X/S and PS5 on consoles – and in this respect show a more next-gen-looking performance.
Said rumor comes from Jeff Grubb, a renowned and well-informed insider. He shared the relevant information in his current edition of the Grubbsnax podcast giant bomb With.
It states that publisher EA is still targeting a release later in 2022. “Need for Speed is still scheduled to come out this year – that’s right, the game should be out in November,” Grubb said. “If you’re a Need for Speed fan and have already bought a next-gen console, here’s another piece of news: It’s going to be next-gen exclusive. They’re transitioning to next-gen exclusivity.”
The new speculation reaches us about a year after we last heard about the next Need for Speed. In March 2021, it was confirmed that the longtime developers of Criterion had to help with the shooter Battlefield 2042, which was in the works at the time. It has since been published – albeit with poor feedback from the community – so that work on Need for Speed can now continue. The formal announcement of the next Need for Speed by Criterion is still pending.
