The industry chain has previously reported that Apple has completed key production tests of its long-rumored augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headsets.
The device has completed Phase 2 of Engineering Validation Testing (EVT 2) to ensure the prototype device meets Apple’s design goals and specifications, and is expected to debut by the end of 2022.
The update says that the beta version of iOS 16 is “full of references to headsets and their interactions with iPhones.” It is estimated that the existence of these references could mean a product launch anytime during the iPhone 16 cycle, which is between June 2022 and June 2023.
The references could also suggest that Apple may be preparing an early preview of some AR and VR software, possibly even the device’s operating system, “rOS.”
According to sources, Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset will feature three displays. The configuration of the display will include two micro OLED displays (4K) and one AMOLED panel. Sony will provide the micro OLED display that Apple will use, and the price is expected to start at least 20,000.
Sony recently showed off a 4,000-pixel-per-inch 4K display specifically for use in VR headsets, and reports suggest it may have been developed specifically for Apple. If Apple is indeed using this technology from Sony, a hypothetical 4000 x 4000 pixel array would suggest the headset’s display would measure 1.4 inches diagonally.
