Everyone probably recognizes themselves – you have guests at home and they ask for the password to the network. Then it is of course difficult to say no to your friend or fat family. But really, you might find it a bit cumbersome that they now have access to your network forever, because of course their device saves the login.
The methods available for shutting people out of your wireless network all require you to be able to log in to your router and change settings. There are not many possibilities, but we show them here. Of course, they can also be used if you suspect unauthorized intrusion and then it is primarily a new password and the most secure encryption, namely wpa2-psk, that applies.
Take care when you try step 3, check if you find any devices that you do not recognize at all. It could be a unit that has nothing to do there at all.
Note that all router settings look different and you must navigate the interface that applies to your own router. The examples are from a Netgear Orbi.
1. Guest network
The very best thing is to initially only give them access to a guest network that is completely separated from your private one. Many modern routers support this and just select the network name and password in the settings.
2. Password
A simple and completely secure solution is of course to change the password. However, it does cause problems for yourself, especially if you have many devices that you then have to change in order for them to access the network.
Address
One solution that most modern routers support is mac address filtering. All devices have their own, completely unique address and it can be blocked. Your router has a list of devices that have been connected.
4. Block
Add the devices you want to block. The method is not foolproof, as it is possible to falsify its address. But those are not the villains you hang out with, are they?
