An issue with updating the Apple Studio Display firmware is now resolved after several users reported an error that said “unable to complete”.
While it initially seemed like it might just be a server issue, it is now suspected that the issue is due to an annoying Apple bug…
Background
A month ago, Apple announced Studio Display for $1,599.
The studio display has a diagonal of 27 inches and a screen resolution of 5K. You can also get a nanotexture display option to minimize glare. The Studio display is embedded with an A13 chip for rich integration and features, including speaker power and a Center Stage-enabled webcam.
However, reviewers soon began to complain about the quality of this webcam.
It looks awful in good light and downright pathetic in low light[producing[agrainynoisyimagewithvirtuallynodetailItrieditinFaceTimeinZoominPhotoBoothinQuickTime–younameitit’sthesamesadimagequality[создаваязернистоезашумленноеизображениепрактическибездеталейЯпробовалэтовFaceTimeвZoomвPhotoBoothвQuickTime—чтоугодноэтотожесамоепечальноекачествоизображения[producing[agrainynoisyimagewithvirtuallynodetailItrieditinFaceTimeinZoominPhotoBoothinQuickTime–younameitit’sthesamesadimagequality
Apple promised that this would be fixed in a software update, meaning that many people tried to install the first firmware update as soon as it became available. However, many of them failed to do so, instead seeing an error message.
The Apple Studio Display firmware update could not be completed. Please try again in an hour. If the problem persists, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Apple Studio Display Firmware Updates Now Work
Firmware update to version 15.4 now works, although it doesn’t fix the webcam image quality issue. Apple says it will follow.
The reason for the firmware update failure was unknown, but Macworld suggests it may have been due to an unfortunate oversight by Apple – actually forgetting Studio Display existed when iOS 15.4.1 was launched!
As it turned out, the root of the problem was in Apple itself. On Friday, Apple stopped signing iOS 15.4 after releasing iOS 15.4.1 on March 30. When Apple stops signing a version of an operating system, it becomes unavailable and devices cannot install it. Because Studio Display basically has iPhone 11 internals, it cannot install version 15.4 correctly, and version 15.4.1 is not available for Studio Display.

As of Sunday evening, Apple fixed the issue allowing to sign again 15.4.
Although there is no official statement from Apple, this explanation fits the facts perfectly: Apple stopped signing 15.4; Studio Displays failed to update; Apple re-signed 15.4; Studio displays are now updated.
To update, you first need to make sure your Mac is up to date with macOS 12.3.1 and then go to System Preferences > Software Update.
