According to information reported by the Motherboard site, Apple’s AirTag geolocation beacons are increasingly being used to set up remote tracking of women.

The site reports that it has retrieved 150 police records mentioning the term “AirTag” over the past 8 months.

Apple’s discreet beacons are thus increasingly used by men to track the movements of women. The latter noticed the presence of tags after receiving a notification on their iPhone since measures were taken to inform users of the proximity of an unknown AirTag, even allowing them to ring them to deactivate them at need.

Apple Air Tag

This is how more than 50 women reported to the police that they had been the subject of surveillance and stalking organized by their partner or ex-partner, their boss, or a stranger… Very often, the beacons are housed in the victims’ vehicles. In some cases, beacons are also useful for car thieves who can track a vehicle to steal it when it finds itself in a favorable area.

The tags can also be placed in some women’s purse at parties. Bullies can follow their victims to their homes.

The security measures put in place by Apple to prevent the malicious use of Airtags are only visible if the victim has an iPhone… Nevertheless, the tags can also very simply be modified to mute the ringtone or block notifications sent back to other iPhones… It therefore seems that the damage has already been done and that Apple is no longer able to control its product.
