The trial of an Atlantic City police officer, who is accused of siccing his K-9 partner on a man outside a local casino in 2013 and then lying about it, got under way Thursday in Camden Federal Court. Sterling Wheaten, who became an Atlantic City cop in 2007, was indicted in 2018 on charges of violating an individual’s civil rights and falsifying a record after submitting an inaccurate police report about the assault, which was captured on surveillance video outside the Tropicana Hotel and Casino.
