SEGA is a company in full restructuring, that’s for sure. While the brand’s Japanese arcades are closing one by one, the company is experiencing some success thanks to the films dedicated to Sonic. A centralized policy around what makes the success of SEGA internationally and which will materialize soon thanks to the “Super Game” project, the outlines of which we now know.

Several games and NFTs

Remember, it was last November: Microsoft and SEGA signed an agreement within the framework of a major strategic alliance, allowing the Japanese group to use the technology of the American giant to implement its future projects. . Among them was mentioned the “Super Game”.

Although the name may be confusing, we then mentioned the ambitions of a project valued at more than 900 million dollars over the next five years and were already talking about several games. In an interview given to the Japanese site of SEGA, the executive vice-president Shuji Utsumi reiterates the fact that it will indeed be several games:

Several titles are being developed as part of Super Game, and while each title will vary, there is no doubt that they will be interactive titles that go beyond the traditional framework of games. For example, in the past, people who played games were called gamers, but now watching games has become a culture in itself, and those people can no longer be called gamers. I think there is great potential in the relationship between people playing and watching games. We plan to create new entertainment in these possibilities.

Probably based on Microsoft’s Azure technology, this project intends to go beyond the borders of the pure and hard video game industry to offer new experiences. Regarding games in the “Super Game” category, Utsumi-san insists that it must have the following elements: be cross-platform, be translated into several languages, be released simultaneously in the world and be defined as a AAA title. He adds :

Several projects are currently underway for SuperGame. In my department, about 50 people are already involved in the first steps. We expect the final number of employees to be several hundred.

This broad and, it must be admitted, still vague vision of what a “Super Game” will be, however, seems to be based largely on a global experience. The games or other content in this category will likely be technological and visual packages that will apparently rely on NFTs. While SEGA seemed reserved on the subject last January, the opinion is now clearer:

The game has a history of expansion through the connection of various cultures and technologies. Social media and watching gaming videos are recent examples. It’s a natural extension for the future of gaming, which it will expand, to include new areas such as cloud gaming and NFT. We also develop Super Game from the perspective of how well different games can be connected with each other.

SEGA offers here a more than ambitious vision by the voice of one of its leaders. Is this good news though? The brand has been operating in slow motion for several years now and one might fear that it is not up to this large-scale project going beyond the simple framework of the game. Conversely, supported by Microsoft technology and equipped with a substantial budget, the first games out of the “Super Game” mold could come as a surprise. The future will tell…
