The popular software for cleaning up computer memory CCleaner turned out to be buggy – it deleted user applications without asking. It is reported by BetaNews.

According to the source, CCleaner users drew attention to the problem, who complained about the strange behavior of the utility on the specialized forums. The essence of the problem is as follows: when you remove CCleaner from your computer, it “takes away” a random set of user programs installed nearby. For example, here is what one of the victims writes:

“CCleaner 5.91 removed most of my software when I uninstalled CCleaner from Programs and Features in Control Panel. While uninstalling, I saw in the progress bar that some MSI, Steam, and Origin files are being removed, and after it was completed, I saw that Adobe reader, Afterburner, Aida64, Steam, Origin, Discord, HDsentinel, etc. were corrupted (not removed fully). I had to spend another 2 hours to reinstall them and completely scan my computer for malware”

It turned out that the whole thing is in the application bug. Along with its own folder located along the path D:ApplicationsCCleaner For some reason, the utility also deletes other files and folders with software in the neighborhood. Of course, this is not the normal operation of the application, and CCleaner should only remove files that are directly related to it.

Mass complaints about the problem began to arise at the beginning of the week, and now Avast (which owns CCleaner) has responded to them. According to the developers, the random deletion of files and applications along with their software is partly the mistake of the users themselves. However, the company is currently working on a fix and will soon introduce an update that will eliminate the possibility of accidental deletions.
