Since April 5th, players have been able to fight in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and explore the action-adventure with R2D2 & Co. After a number of postponements, developer Traveller’s Tales released the game with an official license and received a number of top ratings. Meanwhile, Lego is entering into another partnership. In the future, the terminal block manufacturer from Denmark will work together with the American company Epic Games. What does this collaboration mean for players?
Lego and Epic Games want to create Metaverse for children
According to the official announcement, it’s not about letting the creators of Fortnite develop new video games. Rather, the two partners aim to to create a virtual children’s world, in which all possible child-friendly Internet offers can be found. According to the press release, the companies are guided by three principles. They want to give kids a safe, digital place to play, respect their privacy, and give their guardians control of their own metaverse. Epic probably uses the Super Awesome technology for this. These are different developer tools to enable software or game developers to create digital experiences for children that are safe and where access control is given to parents.
“The Lego Group has been inspiring the imaginations of children and adults through creative play for nearly a century, and we’re excited to work together to create a space in the Metaverse that is fun, entertaining and made for children and families.” – Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games.
After all, Epic Games is not only the maker behind the shooter Fortnite, but also operates its own online shop called Epic Games Store and the graphics engine Unreal Engine. On the other hand, there is no talk of Lego video games from the developer studio Epic Games. Traditionally, however, Lego likes to license its trademark to different developers who design different Lego games. For example, in addition to various video games from Traveller’s Tales, there is also the sandbox game Lego Universe from Netdevil, the MMO game Lego Minifigures Online from Funcom, Lego Soccer Mania from Silicon Dreams and the free-to-play strategy game Lego Legacy, which was released in 2020: Heroes Unboxed from French mobile game developer Gameloft.
In contrast to the games listed, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga can convince many critics and gamers and achieves one in 47 test reports Average rating of 83 out of 100 on Metacritic. Some players compare the complex combat system with Devil May Cry. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is available on PC, Playstation 5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
