In American movies, phone numbers don’t start like in France. Indeed, the telephone area code begins with three identical digits. But what are they?
” 555- »: this is the number with which telephone numbers begin in American films. A trend from North America widely used in fiction, television and film, or even in comics or songs. A strategic choice allowing the person not to be disturbed if their number appears on the screen.
Here are some examples of fictitious “555-“:
- 555-001: Simon Peter Gruber’s number in Die Hard: A Day in Hell.
- 555-0125: the number of a conquest of Jackson in Hannah Montana.
- 555-2368: the number of ghostbusters in the movie.
- 555-4823: Jennifer’s grandmother’s number in Back to the future.
Also note: all numbers beginning with ” 555- are not fictitious. For example, 555-1212 has been a directory number in Canada and the United States since 1973. Generally, only numbers between 555-0100 and 555-0199 should be used fictionally.
