April 9, 2007. On this day, Apple sold its 100 millionth iPod.

Five and a half years after the portable music player went on sale, this milestone confirms that the iPod has become Apple’s most popular product of all time.

By April 2007, Apple had released more than 10 iPod models: five original iPods, two iPod mini versions, two iPod nanos, and two iPod shuffles. The devices have given life to a huge ecosystem of more than 4,000 accessories. In addition, more than 70% of cars produced in the US had iPod connectivity.

100 million iPods is just the beginning

Along with the success of the iTunes Music Store, the iPod represented Apple’s rise to the top of the technological arena, a surprising turnaround for a company that had been on the brink of bankruptcy just a decade ago.

To celebrate the sale of 100 million iPods, Apple enlisted celebrities from the worlds of music and sports and placed an ad in The Wall Street Journal dedicated to the event.

But that was only the beginning. By 2011, Apple had sold a whopping 300 million iPods. The company then eventually stopped reporting iPod sales. But, as you know, the iPhone passed the milestone of 1 billion units sold in the summer of 2016.
