…2007: At first it was just one of many: Apple’s first portable music player, the iPod. But after initially moderate sales figures – which may also be due to the fact that the player could initially only be loaded with the Mac and not with the PC – the iPod soon became the dominant MP3 player in the USA and later worldwide; its elegant white exterior set a design trend and the operating concept set new standards. On April 9, 2007, Apple proudly announced in a press release that it had sold a total of 100 million iPods since the introduction of the first model in October 2001. According to Apple, billions of songs have been sold since then via the online shop Itunes, a no less impressive number that Apple into a music provider to be taken seriously. Reason enough for Apple to change the company name in January 2007 – and to remove the word ‘computer’ from it.
