As is well known, Square Enix admitted a few weeks ago that “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” has not yet been able to meet commercial expectations. In an interview, the developers at Eidos Montreal also spoke about sales figures and a possible successor.
Even if the action title “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” was received very positively by both players and critics, commercial expectations could not be met. The responsible publisher Square Enix already admitted this in February of this year.
As part of this year’s BAFTA Awards, the Eurogamer colleagues got a chance to exchange a few words with Creative Director Jean-Francois Dugas and Senior Narrative Director Mary DeMarle. While Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, like other games, isn’t perfect, Eidos Montreal feels they’ve made the most of what’s possible and delivered a quality title.
“In my eyes it’s a great ride,” Dugas is quoted as saying. “It’s emotional. It has many qualities. Is the game perfect? Like any game, no, I don’t think it’s perfect. It’s always better.
Developers satisfied with the final product
“And have you played anything this year or last year that’s unlike anything else? And is it worth investing time in? I honestly think it is. From a game point of view,” added Dugas, making it clear that the creative minds at Eidos Montreal have nothing to complain about when it comes to the quality of the title. “We did everything we could, but that’s the reality of the market…”

The creative director continued: “And let’s not forget that this is a new IP. Even if everyone says that ‘Guardians [of the Galaxy] known’, it’s still a new IP in the video game market. It could be that a lot of people don’t even know the game is out, or they’re not sure what exactly it offers.”
Possible successor?
And what are the chances that a sequel to “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” will see the light of day sooner or later? Duglas doesn’t want to commit to anything here, but points out that one should never say never. “Right now we’re not talking about the future because every time we complete a project, it’s a time to shut down, pack up and take a vacation,” Duglas said.

And further: “So, I think we’ll know what we’re going to work on next in the coming months or years, so we’ll see. Never say never and never say anything.” The in March 2022 Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on Xbox Game Pass.
According to unconfirmed reports, Microsoft not only paid five to ten million US dollars for this. At the same time, sales figures on other systems have benefited from the release of multiplatform titles in Xbox Game Pass in the past. Time will tell if the same is the case with “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy”.
