A Twitter employee last year shared a preview of an unreleased feature that allows users to “unmention” themselves in a conversation. Now, the company has finally confirmed that it is working on a new “Unmention Mention” feature that is now available to some users.
As the official shared Twitter Security Profile, users will be able to remove themselves from conversations when someone mentions them. In other words, if a user mentions your Twitter profile in a tweet with your username, you will be able to remove the mention of that tweet.
While your username will still appear on the original Tweet, it will no longer link to your profile. In addition, users who remove themselves from the conversation will no longer receive notifications of any interactions with that particular tweet, as well as future mentions if someone replies to the tweet.
Back in 2020, Twitter introduced new options to allow users to restrict who can reply to their tweets. The company explained the addition of this feature as a way to “minimize unwanted responses and improve meaningful conversations.”
Twitter stated that the purpose of the “Hide Replies” feature is to encourage users to be more careful about what they write. Allowing users to hide replies can discourage people from posting hateful and inappropriate replies in the first place.
According to Twitter, a new option to remove yourself from a conversation is now available to a small group of Twitter web users. It is not yet clear when (or if) this feature will be available to everyone.
How do you say “Don’t @me” without saying “Don’t @me”?
