Want to increase the privacy of all your WhatsApp messages, texts, conversations and chats? You can set WhatsApp to make all messages disappear automatically by default. If you want all messages to disappear after 24 hours, 7 days, 90 days or not at all, you have the option. Whether you use WhatsApp on iPhone or Android, this setting is available in every WhatsApp app.
Note that this is a setting that will apply to all messages in WhatsApp, effectively setting all chats to automatically disappear by default. This is how this setting differs from enabling disappearing messages for a specific chat thread, which is also possible.
How to make WhatsApp messages disappear by default
Ready to have all your WhatsApp messages disappear automatically by default? Here’s how to change this setting:
- Open WhatsApp and go to “Settings” in the bottom right corner.
- Select “Account”
- Go to “Privacy”
- Tap Default Message Timer under Disappearing Messages.
- Choose how long you want to wait for messages to disappear: 24 hours, 7 days, 90 days, off.
- Exit settings in WhatsApp and return to regular chat.
Any new message will automatically disappear according to the time setting you choose.
Again, this is different than just turning on disappearing messages for a specific WhatsApp conversation because it applies to all conversations.
Keep in mind that disappearing conversations is not reliable and does not guarantee that the message will never reappear somewhere, especially if someone copied it, took a screenshot, forwarded the message, or otherwise saved the message. And who knows if they’re actually deleted from WhatsApp’s servers or somewhere else they might be stored, but it’s probably better to assume that, like everything else on the internet, it’s not completely private. So, if you are planning on revealing some serious secrets through WhatsApp, you might want to reconsider and do it in person instead.
