Posted this week, 2022 barometer of the behavior of French people on the road d’AXA Prévention brings up something never before seen concerning the use of smartphones on the road. According to the 18th edition of this survey, 80% of motorists use their smartphone while driving.

Compared to 2021, this is an increase of 11 points and the new all-time high with a rate that had previously reached 66% five years ago. In 2004 and therefore before the appearance of the smartphone, 22% of drivers admitted to phoning while driving.

In terms of uses, 52% make calls (+8 points in one year), 45% configure the GPS (+12 points), 34% consult or send SMS (+10 points), 24% consult their notifications ( +11 points) and 8% publish stories on social networks.

AXA Prevention also highlights a smartphone that ” stands out as a work tool in the daily life of motorists ” with 15% sending emails while driving, and 6% attending a work meeting.

It should also be remembered that the use of headsets and a hands-free kit has been prohibited since mid-2015, but not Bluetooth kits allowing communications without physically handling the smartphone and the hands-free systems integrated into the vehicle.

Sharp increase among cyclists

For AXA Prévention, the Kantar study was carried out online from January 10 to 25, 2022 with a sample of 2,256 people, representative of the resident population in mainland France aged 18 to 75.

It shows a strong increase of +14 points for cyclists, 72% of whom now use their smartphone on the road. Despite a drop of 3 points over one year, 84% of scooter users use their smartphone while riding. This is a rate of 46% (+8 points) among bikers and scooter users.
