Pictures of the socket SP5, which is really big, are doing the rounds on the Internet. You could already guess that from pictures of the matching CPU, Genoa (Zen 4). The 6,096 are due, among other things, to the large memory interface and the many PCI Express 5.0 lanes.

Socket SP5 is large, the number of contacts gives an idea. 6,096 in number, arranged as a Land Grid Array (LGA). Makes 7.5 x 7.2 centimeters. And now there are pictures of it. The socket is intended for CPUs codenamed Genoa and Bergamo, and perhaps products that come after them. With Genoa (Zen 4) 96 cores are expected to be supported, with Bergamo 128 cores. In addition, there is the expansive memory interface, which can address 12 channels of DDR5 memory, which is one of the reasons for the numerous socket contacts.

AMD Zen 4: Alleged image of Genoa is doing the rounds

Overall, the SP5 socket offers 2,002 more contacts than AMD’s current SP3 server socket. This is particularly due to the fact that DDR5 and PCI-Express 5.0 are required more and will also be reflected in the end customer area in the upcoming AM5 desktop socket, which will be switched to LGA, but will not quite reach the physical dimensions of AMD’s “Big Boy”.

The processors are marketed as the Epyc 7004 series; AMD had already announced that. Like Bergamo (which should start a little later), Genoa relies on the Zen 4 architecture, which is manufactured at TSMC in 5 nm. The processors of the Genoa type are equipped with up to 96 cores, organized in up to 12 CCDs per package. DDR5 is supported with 5,200 MT/s on 12 channels and so 12 terabytes should be able to be installed if 512 bars are used – but in the full configuration then probably only with 4,000 MT/s. Meanwhile, PCI Express 5.0 is on board with 128 lanes. The TDP will peak at around 400 watts. More details, such as clock rates, are of course not yet known. The SP5 socket is also said to support the AMD Epyc 7005 (Turin series), which is expected to be launched between 2023 and 2024.
