Epic Games has just launched its new Unreal Engine 5 on the market and the group intends to help developers exploit it and integrate content more easily into their games.
This is how Epic Games announces RealityScan, a mobile photogrammetry application that offers to simplify the scanning of 3D objects.
Instead of thus modeling objects from scratch, the application offers to take several shots of the latter to reproduce it in 3D and with its colors and textures automatically.
The concept is not new, but it is gaining in flexibility thanks to the increasing power of smartphones and the integration of ever more precise photo sensors. In a demonstration video, we can see how easy it is to generate a 3D rendering of an armchair in a few minutes.
The photos are sent back to Sketchfab which is responsible for assembling them and modeling the whole. After a few minutes, the model is available and ready to be integrated into 3D environments.
Still, this technique suffers from a few limitations: It remains complex for the AI to clearly define the areas which tend to reflect light or, on the contrary, which would be too dark. In traditional photogrammetry, it is mandatory to paint certain surfaces or to use matting powders to obtain good results, something that seems unthinkable for an armchair for example.
The application will be launched in the coming months: an early version will be available in the spring on iOS, while the Android version will be released a little later.
