Yesterday, the US imposed full blocking sanctions against Sberbank and Alfa Bank. Then it was reported that Sberbank would continue to operate as usual and the imposed sanctions would not have a significant impact on the work of the bank and would not affect the service to the Russians in any way. However, not everything is so obvious.
Apple and Google operate under the laws of the United States, so they must comply with the new regulations. It can easily be assumed that after Sberbank and Alfa-Bank are sanctioned, these companies may remove banking applications from their digital stores. In short, it is quite likely that customers will be deprived of the opportunity to download mobile banking clients from the App Store and Google Play.
iPhones and iPads will be particularly hard hit as Android users will simply install the APK file and continue using the app. However, Sberbank and Alfa-Bank can re-release the mobile client in the App Store, after getting rid of logos and identification. For example, this is what the RNKB bank did in its time.
Meanwhile, representatives of Sberbank got in touch on Telegram, where they wrote that they were ready for a situation with possible restrictions on applications in foreign stores.
“Sber has prepared solutions in advance that will allow keeping the full functionality of the applications already installed on phones. In addition, we have adapted the web version of SberBank Online for use on mobile devices, and we are also working on alternative ways to conveniently distribute applications for customers.
For the smooth operation of the SberBusiness mobile app, we recommend that corporate clients do not remove the mobile app from smartphones and tablets. If you’ve been planning to download our app but haven’t done so yet, now is the time.”
