Cybersecurity company Kryptowire has announced the discovery of a major localized security flaw in Samsung smartphones running Android 9, 10 11 and 12. It would affect millions of Galaxy smartphones worldwide, including recent Galaxy S22 and the new generation of Galaxy A.

The flaw in question is located in the “telephone” application preinstalled on all devices of the brand by Samsung. An insecure application component allows local applications to perform privileged operations without user authorization.

Hackers could thus take full control of a smartphone remotely, simply by distributing infected applications specifically targeting the Samsung Telephone application.

The flaw does not affect Samsung devices running versions prior to Android 9.

Samsung rolled out a security update in February 2022 and believes it has been released to enough devices around the world for the flaw to be discussed.
