Apple released iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 developer betas yesterday, and it’s likely that a public beta is just around the corner. While this latest beta does not contain new features and changes like iOS 15.4, it does contain a small number of updates and improvements.
In this how-to video, I go over half a dozen new changes and features in iOS 15.5 beta 1. Don’t forget to subscribe to YouTube for more iOS video walkthroughs.
What’s new in iOS 15.5 beta 1?
New “Request” and “Submit” buttons for the Apple Cash in Wallet app. The physical Apple Card is now called “Titanium Card” in wallet settings. Apple Pay has been renamed to the Apple Cash Messages app. Rename iTunes Pass to “Apple Account Card” in the Wallet app. New Wi-Fi signal bands for HomePod connection in the Home app. The home app now includes a critical alert notification. Universal Control in iPadOS 15.5 requires all devices to be updated to the latest beta versions.

Sight
iOS 15.5 is heavily focused on improvements and changes related to the Wallet app, so there are no huge standout user-facing features here. However, the presence of Wi-Fi signal strength indicators in the Home app for HomePods is a nice improvement. This change may make it easier to decide how best to organize the physical network and related HomePods scattered around the home. It can also help troubleshoot HomePods that don’t connect to the network properly.
Even if your HomePod is running version 15.4 and not the latest 15.5 beta, you can still see Wi-Fi signal strength in the Home app. Previously, only the SSID was displayed in the Wi-Fi network settings section of the HomePod. For a HomePod in a stereo pair, you’ll have to go into the Speakers panel to access the settings for each individual HomePod. If there is any connection problem, it will be indicated by an exclamation mark on the Wi-Fi signal indicator as shown below.

No doubt more improvements and changes will be added to iOS 15.5 as the beta testing cycle continues. In the meantime, please share your thoughts on the first iOS 15.5 beta in the comments below.
