Epic Games has finally released the full version of Unreal Engine 5. There are two sample projects that are offered free of charge.
Two years after the announcement and almost a year after the Early Access phase, the time has come: Unreal Engine 5 is available. The promising game engine can now be used freely by all developers.
“City Sample” and Lyra Starter Game”
Interested parties can download the engine via the Epic Games Launcher. In addition, the manufacturer offers the “City Sample”, which is the city from the Matrix demo. It consists of 7,000 buildings, 17,000 vehicles, 35,000 MetaHuman pedestrians. A sample gameplay is also available with “Lyra Starter Game”. It is officially described as an “excellent starting point for creating new games”. More versions are expected to appear in the future to illustrate impressive results.
Past demo versions have already demonstrated what Epic’s latest engine is capable of. Most notably, the UE5 playable experience”The Matrix awakens‘ caused a stir around the world. There was also a test version to admire when the early access phase was introduced. The first real-time demo was shown at the unveiling in May 2020.
Numerous productions will be based on the new Unreal Engine. For example the recently announced one “The Witcher” spin-offs, “Quantum Error” or “Black Myth Wukong“. The engine could also be used in “Mass Effect 5” or “BioShock 4”.

One of the most important functions is the geometry technology Nanite. This allows cinematic assets to be inserted into game scenes. The Lumen lighting system, which uses ray tracing methods, will be just as important. Also worth mentioning are the Virtual Shadow Maps, which provide particularly realistic shadows. In order to enable temporal anti-aliasing, the developers in turn rely on Temporal Super Resolution.
