Sweden’s Nils van der Poel, who took two years off from speed skating after the 2018 Olympics, came from behind in the final laps to get 5,000 metres gold at the Beijing Games on Sunday. World champion Van der Poel, whose paternal grandfather is from the sport’s super power Netherlands, clocked an Olympic record 6 minutes 8.84 seconds. Dutchman Patrick Roest seemed on course towards gold when van der Poel, skating in the last pair, trailed by two seconds with three laps to go.
