In the coming weeks, Google Maps will release three major updates that will add toll estimates and improve navigation with a new map, while the iOS app will receive a number of additional integrations.
Some users have seen estimated fares on Google Maps since last year, and Waze already offers that option. The data comes from local toll authorities, with Google taking into account “the cost of using a travel pass or other payment methods, the day of the week, and the estimated cost of the toll at the particular time you’ll be crossing it.”
It will begin rolling out to nearly 2,000 toll roads in the US, India, Indonesia, and Japan this month on Android and iOS. Other countries “coming soon”.
Meanwhile, Google Maps will display more street information when navigating. This includes traffic lights and stop signs along your route and places of interest, as well as building footprints and other “improved details”. Besides:
And in some cities, you’ll see even more detailed information, such as the shape and width of the road, including lanes and islands, so you can better understand where you are and reduce the chance of changing lanes at the last minute or missing a turn.
This new navigation map is coming to Google Maps for Android, iOS, Android Auto and CarPlay in select countries in the coming weeks.
Finally, there are three updates for iOS. This starts with a new pinned trip widget that will show the arrival time, next transit departure, and suggested travel routes. Google is also reducing the Maps search widget, and these features will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

The Apple Watch app is getting more powerful, allowing you to start routes right on your wearable device, instead of starting on your iPhone. It also gets a “Take Me Home” watch face complication.
Finally, in the coming months, Google Maps will receive support for shortcuts such as “Hey Siri, get directions” or “Hey Siri, search Google Maps”, and “extended Siri search functionality [is] coming later this summer.”
