How many buttons does a mouse need? Surely everyone has their own opinion on this. Roccat’s new Kone XP is one of those little buggers that have more to offer than just the standard keys. And there are a lot more options for occupancy. So the company relies on flexibility here, and that in turn costs you around 90 euros to buy. Is it worth it?
Basically, the wired Kone XP has 15 different buttons. With the help of Roccat’s EasyShift function, this ultimately results in 29 possible key assignments. Should be enough, right? I’m more worried about whether I could remember them all. In any case, the mouse is quite flexible, keys can be assigned standard functions, hotkeys and macros. The alternative assignments are triggered by holding down the EasyShift button on the side of the mouse and then pressing the other button. Alternatively, the EasyShift button can also be placed on the keyboard if you prefer.
The Kone XP is well built and comfortable
Depending on what you do with the mouse all day long, you have a lot of options to adapt flexibly to your needs. The 4D mouse wheel helps, among other things. You can not only rotate and click on it as normal, you can also click to the left and right with it. Roccat also relies on its Titan Switch Optical for the Kone XP, which is faster than any mechanical key switch. Well, I certainly can’t complain about the response times. Also, these have a lifespan of around 100 million clicks, so in theory you’ll get something out of it for a while.
The good news is that the Kone XP fits comfortably in your hand. At least in your right hand, because it is definitely not suitable for left-handers due to its construction. You have a pleasant feeling pushing the little rodent over the pad, which works with ease thanks to the mouse feet made of heat-treated PTFE. In addition, the cable is very flexible and flexible, so it doesn’t annoy you like some other cables that are less flexible. All in all, the Kone XP is extremely comfortable to use and in the few weeks that I used it for the test, I enjoyed working and playing with it at all times.
Roccat’s Kone XP is colorful
The Kone XP is also an eye-catcher with its 3D RGB lighting. The 22 LEDs and eight light guides ensure an atmospheric background light thanks to the transparent surface of the mouse. As usual with Roccat’s RGB ecosystem Aimo, you have 16.8 million colors available here, you can choose between different modes and on top of that you can synchronize them with other devices. Definitely beautiful to look at.
What else is there? Easy Aim is of course also supported. You can assign this function to a button and if you hold it down, the DPI setting you have chosen applies for as long. If you want to temporarily change the DPI for precise aiming in shooters, this is possible. Incidentally, the DPI value can be set here in the range from 50 to 19,000. On top of that, the Kone XP is compatible with Nvidia Reflex.
Another flexible option is linked to the mouse wheel. Select a button for the easy wheel function, hold it down and then turn the mouse wheel. Depending on the function, you can change the volume or the DPI setting, switch between profiles, switch between apps and so on.

Ultimately, the Roccat Kone XP is a well-functioning and well-made mouse. It does what it’s supposed to, whether at work or at play. So why should you choose this particular mouse? Well, that depends on various things aside from the basics, which she does wonderfully. On the one hand, it is flexible and offers you many possible key combinations. So if you’re looking for something like that, this is an interesting candidate for you. On the other hand, I find them optically chic and, as is well known, the eye eats with them. Even if you don’t use the many key (combinations) regularly, the Kone XP is a good choice because of its quality – if you’re willing to invest 90 euros in it.
