Sony is certain that the quality of first-party games would suffer if they appeared in the new PS Plus line-up right on the first day of release.

For first-party games, Sony draws its line for the time being

Sony CEO Jim Ryan confirmed Gamesindustry.bizthat first-party games cannot be played directly at launch in the new subscription model, which could be announced this week, as is the case with Xbox Game Pass from competitor Microsoft.

“We feel like we’re in a good cycle with the studios,” said Ryan, “where investment brings success, which in turn allows for further investment, which in turn brings further success. We like this cycle and we think that our players like this cycle.”

Speaking of incorporating their new releases into the new subscription service, Ryan said: “As you know, this isn’t a path we’ve taken in the past. Nor is it the path we’re going to take with this new service. “

“We feel that if we do this with the games that we develop at PlayStation Studios, that cycle will be broken. The investments we need to make in our studios would not be possible and we believe the impact on the quality of the games we develop would not match what players want.

Maybe things will be different in the future?

Nobody can say what will happen in the future. Even Ryan points to the shift PlayStation has gone through in terms of PC releases, for example.

“We had [mit den PC-Portierungen] a huge critical acclaim and a huge commercial success, and everyone has come to terms with that and is totally fine with it. I look back four years and I don’t think anyone saw this coming.”

Ryan continues, “So I don’t want to set anything in stone at this point. I’m just talking today about the approach we’re going to take in the short term. The way our publishing model works right now, it doesn’t make sense. But things can change change very quickly in this industry as we all know.

At Microsoft, the approach of also offering the first-party games as part of a subscription model right at launch works wonderfully. Let’s see where the future takes PlayStation with their new service.
