For a long time people were hoping for the “real Monkeys Island 3” and now it can become reality: Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox and Devolver Digital have secured the rights from Disney and want to bring an adventure called Return to Monkey Island onto the market.
Ron Gilbert’s April Fool’s joke turns out to be true: Devolver Digital and Terrible Toybox were actually able to wrest the rights to the Monkey Island brand from Disney. There’s a new adventure of the legendary pirate game coming, and quite possibly the “real Monkey Island 3” that many have been wishing for for decades, as Gilbert holds the reins for Return to Monkey Island in the hand. And best of all: It’s still coming in 2022, according to the trailer.
According to them, Return to Monkey Island is the long-awaited game that is supposed to follow on from “The curse of Monkey Island” and “Monkey Island: LeChuck’s revenge”. Not much is known, but one can already say that it won’t be a pixel art game like Thimbleweed Park. Terrible Toybox uses 3D technology and the trailer should already make it clear what style the adventure will have. This might displease the die-hard fans in particular, but it’s at least roughly in line with the Monkey Island special editions. The English fans can at least be appeased with the return of the voice of Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate, who is again provided by Dominic Armato.
Rex Crowle is Art Director and has worked on games like Tearaway and Little Big Planet. Gilbert once said at Thimbleweed Park that he can no longer make such players for purely economic reasons. The title was swarm-financed, but also brought in less revenue than one would wish – classic adventures don’t have it easy these days. Some will now go back to Ron Gilbert’s 2013 blog post explaining what he would do if there were a new Monkey Island. Whether and what of this is still realistic today remains to be seen. Also, don’t forget that Disney’s and Devolver Digital have potential to have their say. After all: He once promised to announce it on April 1st and so it happened.
And while you listen to the nostalgic sounds of the Monkey Island theme in the short trailer, one or the other veteran wonders whether we will ever see an Indiana Jones adventure. While the brand is currently being breathed new life at Machine Games, the odds of an adventure are certainly increasing – especially if the Monkey Island reboot is a success. Disney now owns the rights to the brands through its acquisition of Lucasfilm a few years ago, which also incorporated Lucasarts into the entertainment giant.
