Point’n click fans no longer hoped for it and yet. Ron Gilbert’s cult saga will be back with Return to Monkey Island.

Incredible but true, the Monkey Island saga will be back this year with its creator at the helm. Return to Monkey Island presents itself as the official sequel to the cult games of the 90s.

Return to Monkey Island an official sequel announced

What an unexpected announcement. Devolver Digital has turned an ordinary Monday into one of the best days for point & click enthusiasts. The famous indie game publisher has revealed Return to Monkey Island, billed as the legitimate successor to The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

The saga initiated in the 1990s has a total of five games, but only the two certified Ron Gilbert are considered official by many nostalgic players. That’s good, since the latter will ultimately not keep his promise never to touch a Monkey Island again without recovering the intellectual property. After all, he got the green light from Lucasfilm Games to resume his quirky universe.

Ron Gilbert at the controls

In secret preparation for two years, Return to Monkey Island will be developed by Terrible Toybox, a studio with which the creator has already released Thimbleweed Park. Will therefore be in charge Ron Gilbert supported by the label having made the heyday of the genre.

And since good news never comes alone, beautiful people will be back to ensure the filiation. Dave Grossman (writer), Michael Land (composer) and Dominic Armato (voice of Guybrush Threepwood) will also be there. Only Tim Schafer is missing, no doubt for obvious contractual reasons. The artistic direction of the project will be provided by Rex Crowle (LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway). Return to Monkey Island is expected this year on as yet unannounced platforms.
