When even its own people don’t believe the propaganda anymore, the Commonwealth should urgently change course in its public relations – that’s the impression in the new episode of The Walking Dead, Truth (S11E15). The best example of this is Mercer, the chief of the Commonwealth soldiers. He was previously known as a very loyal Commonwealth soldier. After only recently discovering that something is wrong in the state to which he has sworn loyalty, he is wracked with guilt. However, not to the Commonwealth, as his new girlfriend Princess quickly finds out, but to himself and that he has helped cover up the truth for so long. That should change now.

And also Rosita and Eugene are trying to tell more people the truth about the Commonwealth. In order to accomplish that, Connie is tasked with writing an investigative article about Sebastian Milton’s fundraising efforts. Unfortunately, they can’t do that without solid evidence. Eugene wants to get these from Max, who is not only his girlfriend and secretary to Pamela Milton, but also Mercer’s sister. A joint group is formed that wants to uncover the machinations in the Commonwealth.
New allies, old enemies
Lance Hornsby is known to be behind many of them, and he’s still on the hunt for his guns. But first he finds dead Commonwealth soldiers, with Carlson in the middle. Only Aaron and Gabriel appear to have survived the massacre. They tell Lance that the Commonwealth troops have been ambushed. Of course, Lance doesn’t believe a word they say, but he also has no evidence to convict Aaron and Gabriel of lying.

Which brings us full circle to the beginning of the second part of the eleventh season and “No other Way”. Daryl is still at the gates of Hilltop and wants Maggie to let him in. At his side is Lance Hornsby, who wants to know where his guns went. Now Maggie has to serve for an answer. Lance Hornsby has found her son Herschel’s hat, but before he can put his foot down too much, Maggie steps in. The situation threatens to escalate until Daryl finally manages to convince Lance to leave Hilltop because nothing was found here.
Lance agrees, but only because his men say they have another lead. This leads Lance and some of his people to none other than Leah. After wounding some of the Commonwealth soldiers, Lance makes her an offer. He needs someone to take care of Maggie and get her out of the way – and Leah, it seems, is the perfect woman for that.
One more episode, then The Walking Dead disappears again into a break. “Truth” was a very good preparation for it. The conflict is clear, who is on which side, and the appearance of Leah could mean big trouble for Maggie and one more surprise. Hopefully next week we will see exactly which ones.
