PlayStation could be working on a proper emulation of PS3 games on the PlayStation 5.

The claims at least Venturebeats journalist Jeff Grubb, whose sources allegedly indicate that PlayStation could be working on it.

For now only as a stream

PlayStation recently announced an overhaul of PlayStation Plus that will have three different tiers at different prices.

The most expensive level of the new PS Plus, which will be launched in June, includes access to 340 games from the first PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PSP and PlayStation 3. However, the latter will only be playable via cloud streaming.

That could change in the future

According to Grubb, that could change in the future though: “We’ve been talking about this all week, I’ve been checking and asking… it sounds like Sony is working on a PS3 emulation on the PS5,” he says. “But it might take some time.”

“I wish they would tell us that. Say that they care about these things, because that’s what was missing from the PS Plus announcement… to me it looked like they didn’t care about any of that. They did just cobbled it together, renamed it, and sold it.”

A supposed reason for problems with PS3 emulation on the PS5 is allegedly the unique architecture of the PS3 with its cell processor. But fans are not convinced of this, and neither are YouTubers ModernVintageGamerwho is also a developer at Night Dive Studios, sees no problem in this.

PS3 emulation on the PlayStation 5 is “absolutely possible”, but: “Sony was never interested in investing the millions to make it happen.”

It remains to be seen whether this might change in the future.
