Character actor Ethan Hawke stars in a dual role in Abel Ferrara’s Zeros and Ones. As brothers JJ and Justin, Hawke plays both a US soldier and a wanted terrorist. The extremely vague trailer suggests that a conspiracy is at the heart of the plot. The film was shot in Rome, almost exclusively at night.

In his 70s, writer-director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, The Funeral, Welcome to New York) is as prolific as ever. The provocateur shot his latest art house thriller Zeros and Ones on the deserted streets of Rome during the 2020 Corona lockdown. Drones and hand-held cameras were primarily used. As with all of his films, Ferrara collaborated with composer Joe Delia on the music.

Ethan Hawke plays both the anarchist revolutionary Justin, who is being held captive by what appear to be fascist military forces, and his brother, the US soldier JJ, who comes across videos of Justin’s interrogation. Both are located in Rome, where there were probably terrorist attacks on the Vatican and thus the center of Western religion. In addition, other threats are said to be brewing outside the walls of the city.

Initial reviews from the Locarno Film Festival mention the film’s extreme darkness, making it difficult to see things on screen. In addition, the plot was deliberately kept vague and confusing. Ferrara, who films his own script here, probably works more with motifs and atmosphere than a prominent and stringent plot. Topics that the film touches on include the power structure in Europe, war, the pandemic, religion and American imperialism. We will release Zeros and Ones on May 5th 2022 on Blu-ray, DVD and video-on-demand.
