Demand for mobile electronics, particularly smartphones and tablets, is declining due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and new restrictions in China related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This was stated by Mark Liu, chairman of Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC, one of Apple’s key partners and the exclusive manufacturer of A-series chips.

Consumer interest in smartphones is declining, Liu said, especially in China. He also warned about the growth in the cost of components and materials, and most likely, manufacturers will shift the costs to buyers, which means that we will soon see another increase in prices for equipment. This, in turn, will have a negative impact on demand.

“All industries are concerned about rising costs. The semiconductor industry has already experienced this rise in price,” Liu concluded, adding. that the industry is now also concerned about macroeconomic uncertainty.
