According to recent and as yet unconfirmed reports, the developers at Sony Interactive Entertainment could be working on a PlayStation 3 emulator for the PlayStation 5. At least that’s what Gamesbeat author Jeff Grubb wants to know.
After the rumors of the past few months, Sony Interactive Entertainment recently officially announced the new multi-level version of its in-house subscription service PlayStation Plus.
And as speculated in the past, the higher tier includes access to PlayStation classics across generations. In addition to the fact that the PlayStation Plus classics disappear behind a paywall, the fact that PlayStation 3 games can only be streamed or played via the cloud was criticized in particular.
The PlayStation or PlayStation 2, on the other hand, offers classic emulators and therefore the possibility of playing the classics via the cloud or downloading them first and then playing them. According to Gamesbeat author Jeff Grubb, who is considered a well-informed insider source, the developers at Sony Interactive Entertainment could already be working on a solution.
Emulator still some time away?
As sources familiar with the matter are said to have confirmed to Grubb, a PlayStation 3 emulator for the PlayStation 5 is currently in the works. However, this could take a while to come, as Grubb explained. “Since I’ve been talking about this all week I’ve been looking, I’ve asked… it sounds like Sony is working on an emulation for PS3 on PS5. However, it may take some time,” says Grubb.

The Gamesbeat writer elaborated: “I wish they would come out and tell us that. Tell us you’re interested in this stuff because that’s what was missing from the PS Plus announcement… to me it seemed like they didn’t care. They just smashed it up, gave it a new name and sold it.”
Above all, the fact that the PlayStation 3 era was treated rather neglected in the course of the announcement of the new PlayStation Plus made part of the community angry. After all, that was when the foundation was laid for many of the strengths that characterize today’s PlayStation systems – including PlayStation Plus or the focus on exclusive first-party blockbusters.
