FromSoftware is known for creating multi-layered and complex fantasy worlds: the studio has more than proven this with Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. But for Elden ring did you actually team up with a creative mind from outside: Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin.
Although the fantasy writer was primarily responsible for the lore and story of the RPG and didn’t write a line of text for the actual title, Martin was certainly a smart move as a figurehead for marketing around the Elden Ring. Bandai Namco, the publisher behind Elden ringhas now contacted another great fantasy writer for a new project: Brandon Sandersonthe author behind the Mistborn series.
Dark Souls Meets Mistborn: Will Sanderson Collaborate On A New From Software Game?
The surprising revelation came during a live streams by Brandon Sanderson on YouTube, where he presented some previously secret projects, including, of course, mostly new books. In the stream, he also opened up a massive Elden Ring merchandise pack that gave him Bandai Namco had sent.
In addition to a chic woodcut by melania and a life-size sword, there was also a note in the package: “They’re interested in maybe doing something together, says here. I’m interested too. Note: I actually already have a proposal for them in mind, so I’ll probably send my idea to them and see what they think. […] I always have an idea for everything. That’s the thing. Like, if I made a Soulsborne game, what would I do?”
Sanderson would have liked to have worked on Elden Ring
So Sanderson seems more than interested in working together. Anyone who knows the author knows why: After all, he not only creates gigantic fantasy worlds full-time, but is also a big From Software fan and has played almost all of the studio’s games himself. Consequently, he was from the fact that From is a game along with George RR Martin power, little enthusiastic (via VGC):
“From Software decides to make a fantasy game and they team up with a fantasy writer for it, right? And they choose someone who spends their days blogging about NFL instead of taking the person who writes all of their games since King’s Field has played and consistently ranks it in his top 10? What do you think of that?”
In a live stream earlier this year, he also taunted fellow writer Martin for believing he was better suited to work on Elden Ring: “If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re with George [R.R. Martin] went and played a game with George. And I figure George doesn’t play video games. George has no idea.”
Even if Sanderson is probably not quite as well known in public perception as George RR Martin, the writer is one of the greats in the fantasy scene: with the two series “Dung Born” and “Way of Kings” he wrote himself into the hearts of many fans and was even chosen by Robert Jordan’s widow to end the “Wheel of Time” epic (Original: Wheel of Time).
