Ever since Grand Theft Auto 5 came out in 2013, Rockstar players have only been getting the same game rehash. There was a time when the game company released one open-world hit after the other. And as if this development wasn’t sad enough, Rockstar is now proving how low it really has sunk with the GTA+ paid subscription for GTA Online. A comment.
Rockstar emulates the wrong people
Recently, another big game brand tried a subscription model: Fallout – more precisely Fallout 76. The online game didn’t make a really good impression at launch and for a long time afterwards due to nasty bugs, a miserable technical condition and missing core features. But Bethesda figured it would certainly be a good idea to keep its fresh Disaster game (in every sense) supplemented with a subscription service – and asking for moon prices like 120 euros a year. After all, Rockstar’s subscription for GTA Online is not that expensive. GTA + costs namely only six euros a month and can be canceled at any time. It’s also currently only available for the next-gen consoles. So PS5 players can rejoice: after downloading GTA Online for free on PlayStation 5, they can invest the money saved in Rockstar’s useless subscription service. (Source: PlayStationBlog)
Am I too cynical or does reality look the same? And what could the years to come look like if no one was talking about NFTs anymore, for that discussed subscription models in full-price games? It must not come to that in the first place – and GTA + is the proof.
What can GTA+ do? Spoilers: almost nothing!
Let’s take a close look inside GTA+. From March 29th to April 27th, as a subscription customer, you can ask yourself: “Why did I do that?” And on the other hand you can get the following in-game stuff:
… with which you can’t even buy a good body, since these now cost several million. You still get:
- the sports car Principe Deveste Eight
- the La Mesa auto repair shop
- a waiver of the membership fee in the LS Car Meet
- as a yacht owner an upgrade to the Aquarius superyacht
- other odds and ends and various bonuses
Of course you can too the FOMO element don’t miss out, because there are also member benefits that you have to secure in good time before they expire.
The best is yet to come: As a subscription customer, you can also special cash cards buy in the respective store, which include an additional money bonus. (Source: Rockstar Games) Yep, you’re paying for a service that allows you to do special microtransactions that are different from the usual microtransactions. If you suddenly hear a distant, unfamiliar sound, that’s the money machine at Rockstar HQ, just getting going.
Players agree: Not like that, Rockstar!
I would describe what Rockstar Games and the parent company Take-Two Interactive have delivered over the past few weeks and months as a kind of guide: How to lose your good reputation in a few steps.
Rockstar didn’t do themselves any favors with the GTA Trilogy. Because at launch, the game was tormented by countless bugs and fans punished the game mercilessly.
The next fiasco followed with Grand Theft Auto 5 for next-gen consoles, because it does colossally badly on Metacritic. Above all, the fact that except for three new graphics modeswhich don’t make a game that is almost ten years old look much better, further improvements and innovations compared to the version for PS4 and Xbox One are missing.
But that’s not entirely true: GTA 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X now offers a paid subscription for online mode. But the best thing is: On PS5 and Xbox Series X you already pay a certain amount, to use online services. And here comes Rockstar wanting to sell you GTA+ as a great deal? Just let it sink in.
In any case, fans of GTA Online are pissed off. So angry that they recently started the “GTA Plus Off” campaign. Lots of players have joined forces on Reddit and called for not to play GTA Online on March 29th.
They wanted to show Rockstar how little they think of GTA +. Whether similar actions will follow? I can only hope so. The post has over 30,000 upvotes get and give me a smile.
