We all know the movies with Chucky, that red-haired doll who’s been terrorizing for almost 30 years. This evil doll has returned to several films since child’s play (1989) to decimate entire families with a sharp knife. But Chucky isn’t just a horror movie. Did you know that the story of this evil doll was inspired by a true story? That of Robert the doll and Robert Eugène Otto. Here is their story.
In the 20th century, Mr. and Mrs. Otto, a well-to-do couple, lived in a beautiful house with many servants, including a young woman of Haitian origin who looked after their son. But the young woman would practice black magic, so Mrs. Otto dismissed her. Before his departure, the young Haitian offered a funny doll to little Robert. Indeed, this doll was made of fabric, wool and whose eyes were two large black buttons. Some said her hair was human hair, it was so soft.
Very quickly, the little boy fell in love with the doll. Indeed, he did not move without it, slept with it, ate with it. Robert’s parents were amused by this situation. But one day, the little boy asked his parents to call him Eugene, Robert being the first name of his doll and no longer his. One evening, Eugene’s mother heard a conversation coming from her son’s room. Eugene spoke to his doll in his child’s voice and another much deeper voice answered him. At first, Mrs. Otto saw it as child’s play, thinking that her son was changing his voice. But she realized that the voice was that of an adult, and seemed to come from the doll itself.
Then, young Eugene’s behavior changed completely. Her room was often upside down, mutilated toys were found all over the house. Whenever his parents asked him the question, he answered: “It’s Robert. Then, rumors circulated: neighbors had seen the doll moving after dark, they heard the doll’s devilish laughter. Many servants of the house left, terrified by what they saw. Guests of the Ottos reported that the doll was blinking, so Eugene’s parents decided to take action. They put Robert the doll in a box in the attic. Time passed and the strange phenomena stopped. Eugene also calmed down and forgot his doll.
After years, Eugene returned to live in the family home with his wife. He rediscovered his doll, prepared his own room for her, and his behavior changed more and more. He was violent with his wife, often got angry and, each time, he said: “It’s Robert. The strange doll-related phenomena resumed. One fine day Eugene fell ill and locked himself in with Robert. However, the story does not end there. A new family moved into the Otto house. The 10-year-old found Robert and put her in her doll collection. However, the little girl said she saw Robert moving around and that one night the doll climbed onto his bed to attack him. The parents decided to get rid of it as soon as possible.
Since then, Robert the doll has been in the Fort East Martello Museum. Some visitors to this museum say that the doll blinks, follows them with her gaze, and those who have the misfortune to make fun of her or do not ask her permission before photographing her are cursed. The museum receives thousands of apology letters begging Robert to forgive them, and undo the curse.
