The Death Trash community is eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story. The game, which was announced in a 2015 tweet by developer Stephan Hövelbrink and entered Early Access six years later, now receives monthly updates that advance the story of the indie RPG. We played the current version 0.8.0 (patch 0.8.1 was released at the end of March, the preview was created before the update, editor’s note) and explain what exactly you can expect and how the little game from Berlin will continue.

What is Death Trash about?

Our character walks through corridors and rooms made of cold steel. At the end, an android awaits us and tells us that we can never return to our homeland. We are infected. A survivor. Any attempt to re-enter the old habitat would be fatal. We are an outcast. Arrived on the surface, the steel doors open, musty air hits us and we first have to … puke.

This is how the game Death Trash from the Berlin developer Crafting Legends begins. It all began with an incident that would last for several years and change the planet forever: the Great Bleeding. With this came mysterious beings of flesh, revered by humans and described as titans. Wherever these beings go, flesh grows, which people see as life-giving. Oh, and they eat it too… and puke from it.

A seemingly religious cult quickly forms around these titans, which worships the creatures as gods. Our character also seems to be connected to them in some inexplicable way. At the very beginning we stumble upon a meat octopus who wants to be our friend. It all sounds very cryptic and somehow wacky at first – and it is.

What to expect in Death Trash

As mentioned earlier, our character has a connection to these fleshy titans. It’s our job to find out what it’s all about. In search of answers, a vast wasteland awaits us, which we can explore freely and come up with the usual tasks: explore the world and dungeons, chat with all kinds of NPCs, collect and sell resources. We also take on one or the other side quest and keep stumbling over chunks of meat.

In addition to free exploration of the world and the dungeons, there are of course all kinds of enemies that need to be eliminated. With the choice of various melee weapons or shooting irons, we make our way through the mutant-infested wasteland, eliminate annoying outlaws and demolish machines. With an evasive roll we avoid the attacks of our opponents, which in turn is tied to a stamina bar. In addition, we can develop our own character in different directions. In addition to the role-playing typical attributes such as strength or skill, there is also occultism, through which we can communicate better with the flesh and even recruit little helpers in the form of lumps of meat. So we can play a swashbuckling melee who gets along great with people and empathically unlocks new dialogue options, or the stealthy ranged who can talk to the flesh.
