I’m an 80’s kid. So it’s fair to say that I grew up watching Bruce Willis movies. For a long time he was one of the great action heroes of the late 80s and 90s for me – alongside Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Van Damme and whatever they are called. At the same time, he also appeared in films in which “Rambo”, “Terminator” and Co. would not have fit. His filmography includes not only action, but also comedy, drama, sci-fi, thrillers and more.
There is a sad reason why he has been so often associated with bad direct-to-DVD productions, which has now ended his career prematurely. At the age of 67, aphasia diagnosed, which impairs his cognitive abilities to such an extent that, for example, he can no longer remember any texts at all (via Stern.de). In this special I would like to remind you of my favorite Bruce Willis films and at the same time ask you the question: Which Bruce Willis films are your favourites?
The work of M. Night Shyamalan from 2000 is a comic film, thriller, melodrama and mystery all in one. When I saw the film for the first time, there were no plans for the two sequels, Split and Glass. No problem, the film also works wonderfully on its own, even if the twist at the end isn’t as brilliant as that of The Sixth Sense (see below). However, the staging, the duo Willis and Samuel L. Jackson and the story about the newly discovered superpowers make up for it.
9th place: RED – Older, Harder, Better
I like ensemble films, where “veteran” Hollywood stars band together to make it all over again on the big screen. And apparently Bruce Willis also likes such projects. But as much fun as I’ve had with the Expendables series so far, I liked the two tongue-in-cheek RED films even more. Especially “Older, Harder, Better” with Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren was a very positive and charming surprise.
Rian Johnson may have ruined “The Last Jedi” for many Star Wars fans, but I really liked Looper from 2012 with its intelligent sci-fi time travel story. And with Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Jeff Daniels, the cast was also impressive. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t already!
Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez had teamed up to adapt the Miller comic Sin City for the big screen. The result is a visually stunning cult film that is etched in your brain. All of the independently told stories are equally entertaining, which is also due to the great actors who obviously had fun in their roles.
6th place: Death becomes her
Black humor, that’s what films like to hit a nerve with me, and Robert Zemecki’s Death Becomes Her is one of the best black comedies of the last three decades for me.
Thanks to the script, the wonderful cast (in addition to Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Isabella Rossellini) and some ingenious ideas and effects. It’s still very entertaining today! Those were my places 10 to 6 in my personal ranking of the best Bruce Willis films. Which Bruce Willis movies are your favorites? Places 5 to 1 follow on the next page.
