It has been a long time since a major company defended the Apple App Store in the Epic antitrust case. Last year, Snap’s CEO said he was happy to pay App Store taxes “in exchange for all the amazing technology they provide us,” and now Roblox has said that the Apple App Store improves “safety and security” for its users.

Roblox is backing Apple’s bid to dismiss Epic’s appeal in its key U.S. antitrust case, Reuters reports. As you may remember, the Fortnite maker lost a lawsuit last year over whether Apple had anti-competitive payment rules and fees.

Roblox said in a lawsuit on Thursday:

Apple’s process for reviewing and approving apps available on the App Store enhances security and safety, as well as providing more legitimacy to those apps in the eyes of users.

Roblox played a big role in the Epic v. Apple antitrust case regarding whether it offered games or “experiences,” as Apple’s senior director described it.

Here is some context for the second week of the legal battle between Epic and Apple last year:

What might have sounded like a joke was actually a serious issue in Epic Games’ lawsuit against Apple. In a 2017 email, Apple head of marketing Tristan Kosminka said he was “surprised” that “Roboblox” was approved for the App Store. Epic Games has decided to challenge this decision again in court to try to cast doubt on the Apple App Store review process.

(…) After the developers of Roblox were caught in the middle of a lawsuit, they changed, perhaps in response to the lawsuit, wherever “game” was called “experience” on their website. For example, the Games tab now reads Discoverable in the iOS and Android apps.

At the time, a Roblox spokesperson stated that “the term ‘experience’ is consistent with how we’ve developed our terminology to reflect our understanding of the metaverse.”

An appeal hearing in this App Store antitrust case is expected next year.
